If you're managing a facility upgrade or a new build and you're looking at LEDVANCE's smart lighting options, you've probably noticed they offer both Smart+ WiFi and Smart+ Zigbee versions of many bulbs, downlights, and strips. And if you're like most buyers I've worked with, the first question is: "Which one is cheaper?"
That's the wrong question. (Honestly, it's the question everyone asks.) The better question is: "Which one costs less over the next three to five years, including setup, maintenance, and any potential network headaches?"
I've been a procurement manager for a mid-sized commercial property management firm for the past six years. I manage an annual lighting budget of about $180,000, covering everything from emergency exit signs to high-bay warehouse fixtures. Over that time, I've tested both LEDVANCE Smart+ protocols across multiple projects — some successful, some I'd rather forget. On paper, both do the same job: give you remote control, scheduling, and dimming. But when you start scaling beyond a single room, the differences become — well, they become expensive.
Dimension 1: Upfront Hardware Cost
Let's start with what most buyers look at: the price per unit. I pulled pricing from three major online distributors in January 2025. Here's what I found:

So for a single room or small office: WiFi is cheaper upfront. Period. For a larger space where you'd need multiple bulbs anyway, the hub cost gets spread across more devices, and the per-unit price difference narrows.
Dimension 2: Installation & Setup Time
This is where my personal experience kicked in. When I first tried the WiFi bulbs, setup was straightforward: screw in the bulb, download the app, connect to WiFi. Dimension 3: Long-Term Network Impact & Reliability
This is the dimension that surprised me. I went into this assuming WiFi was the simpler, more reliable option. After all, we already have WiFi everywhere, right?
Wrong. (At least, partially wrong.)
Here's what I found: each WiFi bulb connects to your router individually. If you have 20 WiFi bulbs, that's 20 additional devices on your network. Consumer-grade routers can handle 20–30 devices before performance degrades. But in a commercial setting with staff laptops, phones, printers, and guest WiFi, adding 40 or 50 smart bulbs can push the network to its limit. I saw intermittent connectivity issues across the entire office network after installing 35 WiFi bulbs — not just the lights, but people's Zoom calls started dropping. That was not popular.
Zigbee, in contrast, uses a dedicated mesh network that doesn't touch your main WiFi. The only impact on your network is the hub itself, which connects via Ethernet. The mesh network is also more resilient: if one bulb goes offline, the rest reroute. In our warehouse, I had two WiFi bulbs stop responding within 3 months (maybe power surges or interference). Dimension 4: Scalability & Ecosystem Flexibility
I have mixed feelings about this one. On one hand, WiFi is incredibly simple for a single room. On the other hand, if you ever want to expand the system — say, adding motion sensors, smart plugs, or integrating with a building management system (BMS) — Zigbee is far more flexible.
LEDVANCE's Zigbee products are certified under the Zigbee 3.0 standard, meaning they should work with any other Zigbee 3.0 device from any brand (Hue bulbs, Aqara sensors, etc.). WiFi products, however, are generally locked into the LEDVANCE ecosystem unless they support Matter (which some newer LEDVANCE WiFi products do).
A few months ago, I had to add occupancy sensors to a co-working space for energy compliance. With the Zigbee system, I could integrate sensors from a different manufacturer directly into the existing mesh network. With the WiFi system, I would have needed a separate hub or app for the sensors. Not impossible, but more complexity — and more potential for things to break.
If you think you'll expand the system in the next 2–3 years, Zigbee gives you more options without vendor lock-in. That's a long-term cost benefit that doesn't show up on the initial invoice.
Which Should You Choose? (Honest Scenario-Based Advice)

Choose Smart+ WiFi if:
- You're lighting a small space (1–2 rooms, 10–15 devices max)
- You don't have an existing smart home system and don't plan to build one
- Your WiFi network is robust (good router, not already overloaded)
- Simplicity of setup is your top priority
Choose Smart+ Zigbee if:
- You're lighting multiple rooms, a floor, or a whole building
- You want to add sensors, smart switches, or other devices later
- You need reliable coverage in areas with thick walls or interference
- You're willing to invest a bit more upfront for lower long-term maintenance
One Last Thing: Don't Mix Protocols if You Can Avoid It
I made this mistake early on. I had a few WiFi bulbs in one zone and Zigbee in another, thinking I'd get the best of both worlds. What actually happened was two separate apps, two separate schedules, and a headache every time I had to troubleshoot. My advice: pick one protocol for the whole project. The management overhead of mixing isn't worth it — unless you have a clear technical reason to segment.
