When to Use This Checklist
This is for anyone staring down a lighting failure with a deadline attached. Maybe you're a facility manager who just got a call that half the warehouse lights are out, and the safety inspector arrives tomorrow. Or you're on-site prepping for a client walkthrough and the showroom table lamps won't turn on. I've been there. These seven steps are the ones I actually run through when things go sideways.
I'm a project coordinator at a mid-size facilities company. In the past three years, I've handled 200+ emergency lighting calls — everything from a hotel that lost all corridor lighting before a wedding to a retail client whose LEDVANCE smart system went dark mid-promotion. Here's what works.
Step 1: Figure Out What Actually Failed (Not What You Think Failed)
Before you grab a ladder, ask three questions:
- Is it one fixture or a whole zone?
- Did anything else in the building change recently — new equipment, electrical work, a power surge?
- When did it last work?
I can't tell you how many times I've seen someone replace a driver when the real problem was a tripped breaker in a different panel. People think the most complex component failed. Usually it's the simplest one. That causation runs the other way. I've tracked it — in our service logs, 6 out of 10 "driver failures" traced back to voltage drops or loose connections upstream.
Step 2: Check the Common Failure Points on LEDVANCE Products
If you're running LEDVANCE gear, I can save you some time. These are the failure patterns I see most.
LEDVANCE Floodlight 50W
The driver is the weak link. If the unit flickers or won't come on, swap the driver first. But before you do that — measure the input voltage. If it's below 110V, the driver isn't your problem. I learned this the hard way on a parking lot job in February. Replaced three drivers in 40 minutes, then discovered the panel was feeding 102V because of a shared load with a compressor. Wasted an hour.
LEDVANCE T8 LED Tube
First, pull the tube and reseat it. Sounds too basic to matter, but shipping vibration and thermal cycling loosen contacts over time. About 20% of our T8 emergency calls get resolved with a reseat. If that doesn't work, check the ballast compatibility. If your fixture still has an old magnetic ballast, you'll get erratic behavior regardless of what the tube spec sheet says.
Step 3: Reset Smart Devices in the Right Order
Smart systems fail in different ways. Here's how I handle each type.
How to Reset a Wipro Smart Bulb
Wipro's reset sequence isn't always obvious. Here's what actually works:
- Turn the switch off for 5 seconds.
- Turn it on for 5 seconds.
- Repeat the off/on cycle three times.
- On the fourth cycle, leave the switch on.
- The bulb should flash rapidly. If it doesn't, repeat steps 1–4.
The first attempt often fails, especially if the bulb was previously paired to a network that's still broadcasting. Don't panic — go through the cycle again.
Zigbee Relay (Relais Zigbee) Troubleshooting
Most Zigbee relays have a physical reset button. Hold it for 10 seconds. If the relay doesn't respond, cut power at the breaker for 30 seconds, restore it, then try again. The power cycle forces the module to drop its cached network credentials.
One warning: don't reset a Zigbee relay unless you're prepared to reconfigure the entire mesh network around it. If that relay was acting as a repeater, you'll lose devices further down the line. I've seen this cascade into a full floor losing control after a single relay reset in 2024.
Step 4: Check Your Stock Before You Promise a Fix
This is the step most people skip. If you don't have a replacement driver, tube, or bulb on-site, you're not fixing anything today — you're making phone calls. Know your inventory before you tell the client "no problem."
Our company lost a $12,000 maintenance contract in 2023 because we told a client we could replace a failed LEDVANCE floodlight driver the same day, then discovered we had zero spares in the warehouse. The client had to postpone a nighttime safety drill. That's when we implemented a policy: if a critical fixture is more than two years old, we keep two spare drivers on the shelf.
Step 5: When to Use a Table Lamp as a Temporary Fix
Sometimes the fastest solution isn't fixing the fixture — it's routing around it. A portable lamp table setup works as a temporary light source in waiting areas, lobbies, or any space where you need visible illumination fast.
I've done this on three projects. The client walked through, saw the space was lit, and didn't immediately question the missing ceiling fixture. It bought us time to order the right part.
This worked for us, but our situation was a 2-hour client walkthrough with no safety risk. If you're dealing with a space that has compliance requirements — exit pathways, machinery areas — a table lamp won't cut it. Different calculus entirely.
Step 6: Communicate Like You're Already Solving It
The moment you know there's a delay, tell the client. Not with excuses — with a plan. Here's the message I use:
"We've identified the issue [specific component]. We're replacing it now. Estimated time to resolution is [X] minutes. I'll send a photo when it's back on."
People tolerate delays. They don't tolerate silence. The quality of your communication becomes part of how they judge the fix itself.
Step 7: Log What Failed and Why
This step is boring. It's also the reason our emergency calls dropped 37% between 2023 and 2024. After every incident, write down:
- The fixture model and age
- The failed component
- Root cause (if you can determine it)
- How long the fix took
After six months, you'll see patterns. For us, it was clear: LEDVANCE drivers over five years old fail at 3x the rate of newer ones. That's a preventive replacement schedule waiting to happen.
Common Mistakes That Cost Time
Replacing parts without testing the circuit first. This is the #1 time waster I see.
Resetting smart devices before checking the network. If your Zigbee coordinator is offline, a device reset won't help — it'll just knock the device off the network permanently.
Assuming a dim light means a bad fixture. Sometimes it's a dimmer compatibility issue. LEDVANCE T8 tubes on older analog dimmers will behave unpredictably even when the tube is fine.
Telling the client "it's fixed" before verifying it under load. Turn it on. Wait five minutes. Make sure it stays on. I've seen a driver work fine for 90 seconds, then shut down from thermal protection. That second trip back up the ladder is embarrassing and expensive.
If I remember correctly, our average emergency lighting call used to take 2.5 hours. After enforcing these steps, we're at 1 hour 20 minutes. Same team. Same parts. Better process.
