Where to Put Recessed Lighting in a Kitchen: A Quality Inspector's LEDVANCE Track Light Story

The call came in on a Tuesday afternoon. A contractor I'd worked with once, on a small warehouse job, asked if I could help spec the lighting for a friend's kitchen remodel. The homeowners were related to someone on his crew. They had already been quoted by two lighting showrooms, and both made them feel like the order was too small. It wasn't a five-figure project. Maybe eight recessed downlights, a LEDVANCE track light, a few LEDVANCE bulbs, and some smart dimming. I said yes before I asked about the budget. (Note to self: I still do that.)

I'm a quality inspector. In my day job, I review lighting fixtures before they reach customers. Not a random sample every few months — every delivery that comes through our warehouse. My First Mistake: Assuming a Ceiling Is a Ceiling

When I first started working on this, I assumed the answer was simple: put recessed lights everywhere, spread them evenly, turn them on, done. I thought a kitchen ceiling was basically a warehouse ceiling with nicer cabinets.

What I mean is, I treated the layout like a photometric calculation. Square footage, target foot-candles, lumen output, grid spacing. The problem is that kitchens have people standing at counters, and those people cast shadows. A perfectly even ceiling grid can make a kitchen feel like a parking lot and still leave the cutting board in the dark.

Here's the thing: I only learned this after ignoring a similar warning once. A few years ago, I signed off on a breakroom ceiling with six evenly spaced downlights. Looked great on paper. Then someone put a fridge under one light and a coffee station under the other. Two of the six fixtures became useless. That mistake cost us a complaint and a rework request. (This is not the same kitchen, but it is the same lesson.)

Where to Put Recessed Lighting in Kitchen Projects: The Rule I Actually Use

I visited the kitchen before writing a single spec. The contractor was nice enough to remind me that the drawings didn't show where the homeowner would chop, where the coffee maker sat, or how deep the upper cabinets were. He was right.

So I ended up with a rule I still use: place the recessed housings roughly 20 to 24 inches from the front face of the upper cabinets, not in the middle of the walkway and not in a pure symmetrical grid. That puts the light in front of the person instead of behind their head, which means fewer shadows on the counter.

We used painter's tape to mark the ceiling. Then the homeowner said she planned to add a wooden valence under the cabinets. We moved the line from 22 inches to 25. That one detail isn't in any product brochure.

The IES Lighting Handbook separates general and task lighting, and kitchen task surfaces need noticeably more light than the ambient layer. I don't get there by adding more downlights. I get there by positioning them where the work happens. For an average 8-foot ceiling, I keep the spacing tight enough to avoid dark pockets but not so tight that the ceiling becomes a dot grid.

We also went with LEDVANCE downlights for the general layer, and I checked the CRI rating on the datasheet before approving them. Not because 80 is unacceptable, but because we were dealing with stone counters and natural wood. 80 is fine for a hallway. For a kitchen where you are deciding if meat is still pink, higher CRI helps.

Why a LEDVANCE Track Light Saved the Island

The perimeter downlights covered the countertops. The island was the problem.

An island needs light for eating, for prep, and for looking clean when nobody is at it. My first plan was to cut three small recessed holes above it. Simple. Symmetrical. Boring. But then the contractor sent me a photo of the island with a pot rack hanging over it. A fixed downlight above a pot rack is just a shadow machine.

I went back and forth between all-recessed and a recessed-plus-track combo for almost two days. On paper, recessed felt safer. In the actual room, the track made more sense. One junction box, no extra holes, and the homeowner could aim the beams away from the pot rack or point them at the breakfast bar when needed.

Zigbee 3 and Zigbee Remotes: The Smart Layer

The homeowner asked for dimming without wanting to rewire the whole kitchen. The contractor already had Zigbee remotes from a starter smart-home setup in the living room. My first reaction was to keep it simple and use a standard dimmer. Then we checked the switch boxes: two circuits, steel boxes, extra complexity everywhere.

The kitchen lights were on two circuits, and rewiring for multi-location dimmers would have meant more drywall work than anyone wanted. So we used a few LEDVANCE bulbs from the Smart+ family in the breakfast-bar pendants. Those bulbs are Zigbee 3 certified. We left the wall switches in the on position and used the remotes as the control. It meant no new switch boxes, no neutral wire headaches, and the homeowner got a scene called 'cook' that turned up the task lights and dimmed the track light over the island.

Let me be clear about Zigbee 3: it is not a magic compatibility guarantee. It is an interoperability standard maintained by the Connectivity Standards Alliance. It gives devices from different brands a much better chance of pairing cleanly than the old Zigbee 1.0 and 2.0 days, but I still checked the hub documentation before promising anything. (I really should have written that into the bill of materials.)

Honestly, the pairing was less painful than I expected. The LEDVANCE bulbs joined the network, the Zigbee remotes controlled dimming, and we avoided two hours of drywall work. That counts as a win.

What I Learned From a Small Order

This whole order was maybe $900 in lighting parts. On my normal commercial scale, that's tiny. But it reminded me why I never dismiss small projects.

Small doesn't mean unimportant. It means potential. The vendor or contractor who treats a small kitchen job seriously is the one who gets called for the next office buildout. And the ones who act like the order is beneath them? They lose the relationship before the job even starts.

I should also be honest about my limits: my experience is mostly inspection and compliance, not interior design. If you are a professional lighting designer, you'll probably have more elegant solutions. This is just what one quality inspector learned on one small job.

If you ask me where to put recessed lighting in kitchen projects, my answer will sound annoyingly inspector-like: I need to see the kitchen first. But the fastest way to a better kitchen is not a more expensive fixture. It's a fixture in the right spot, a bulb that talks to the rest of the house, and a supplier who doesn't make you feel small while you figure it out.

Small doesn't mean unimportant. It means potential.
