The Call
It was a Thursday afternoon in March 2024. I was sitting at my desk, going through the final checklist for a large retail space we were opening on Monday. The Insight

The industry has evolved. What was best practice in 2020 (buy a bunch of bulbs, replace them when they burn out) may not apply in 2025. The fundamentals haven't changed—you still need reliable lighting—but the execution has transformed. Smart systems aren't just a gimmick. They're a risk management tool.
The Lesson
After that experience, I changed our company policy. Now, for any project with ceilings over 15 feet, we automatically include a smart control system. Not as an upsell—as a standard requirement. The upfront cost is higher, sure. But the cost of a single emergency replacement on a high ceiling is way, way higher.
Dodged a bullet on that one. Almost went with a cheaper fixture vendor to save $200 on the original order. One click away from a total disaster.
Bottom line: technology is your friend. But you have to know what to ask for. Next time you're spec'ing a project, think about how you'll replace a bulb in a high ceiling before the fixture goes in. It'll save you a ton of time—and maybe a $12,000 contract.
