LEDVANCE Smart+ or Standard: A Quality Inspector's Guide to Under-Cabinet Light Bars, Chandelier Downlights, and Zigbee vs PoE

No universal answer, but a useful set of questions

I review lighting orders before they reach customers—roughly 200 SKUs a year. In Q1 2024, our quality audit rejected about 6% of first samples for CCT mismatch or driver noise. Scenario 2: You are putting light under cabinets

Is under cabinet lighting still popular? Yes. But not for the reason most articles say. It is not an accent trend. What most people don't realize is that under cabinet lighting is task lighting. People got tired of chopping vegetables in their own shadow. Under cabinet lighting is still popular because it makes the countertop the brightest surface in the room, which is exactly what a workspace should be.

If the goal is to highlight a chandelier, choose a narrow beam, a dimmable driver, and a trim that doesn't compete. If the downlight is the ornament, finish and reflector geometry matter more than the LED module. Here's the counterintuitive part: don't order a chandelier downlight expecting it to light the whole room. Use it to create a layer. In new construction, PoE is hard to beat from an efficiency standpoint: one cable carries both power and data, each fixture has an IP address, and commissioning can be done from a laptop. But it needs a network topology planned early, and it needs a PoE switch budget. In a retrofit, Zigbee is often the more efficient path because you don't have to run Cat 6 cable through existing walls. LEDVANCE Smart+ includes both WiFi and Zigbee variants, which gives you flexibility if you're already using a Zigbee bridge.

To be fair, PoE doesn't suffer from wireless congestion the way mesh can in a dense commercial space. But Zigbee uses its own protocol, not WiFi, and with good router placement it's reliable. Personally, I'd choose Zigbee for a retrofit and PoE for a new build with a strong IT infrastructure.

If you're asking 'Zigbee or PoE?' at the product level, you're probably asking too early. Decide the architecture first. Check the current spec sheets before you order.

One standard I always look for

According to the IES (ies.org), LM-80 is the established method for reporting LED lumen maintenance. If a product spec references LM-80, it's using a recognized measurement standard. If it doesn't, ask the supplier for the underlying test report.

For rebates, the DesignLights Consortium (designlights.org) QPL is a useful baseline. As of January 2025, the DLC QPL is updated periodically, so verify the exact model number at project time rather than assuming the product is still listed.

How to tell which scenario you're in

Start with the fixture, then the control system, then the LED module. That order rarely changes.

  • If you are replacing a bulb in an existing GU10 socket, you are in scenario 1.
  • If you are planning a kitchen, office, or vanity with low cabinets and dark countertops, you are in scenario 2.
  • If you want a decorative downlight that looks like part of the ceiling, you are in scenario 3.
  • If you are talking to an integrator about entire floors and centralized control, you are in scenario 4.

Personally, I would not choose the Smart+ WiFi PAR16 for a whole-office deployment, just as I wouldn't choose a chandelier downlight for task lighting. The products aren't in competition; the installation constraints are.

The goal isn't to find the 'best' LEDVANCE product. It's to find the one that matches your installation. In my opinion, the biggest mistake we see isn't picking the wrong brand; it's picking a product that answers the wrong question.
