What I’d buy, and what I’d skip
I’m the office administrator for a 130-person company. I manage purchasing relationships for nearly every non-IT category — roughly $180,000 a year across 12 vendors — and I report to both operations and finance. When someone says “we need new lights,” I’m the one who turns that into a purchase order and then has to defend it when the invoice arrives.
Earlier this year, our facilities manager wanted to replace the fluorescent troffers in two meeting rooms and add under-cabinet lights in the pantry. My search history quickly became a mess: “LEDVANCE cabinet LED slim reviews,” then “LEDVANCE LED panel 600×600,” then “WLED Zigbee,” then “can any light be used as a grow light.” Different questions, but they all ended up in the same purchasing decision. What I compared and why

I compared them on four dimensions:

- Real total cost — not just the line-item price, but everything that has to be added before it works.
If you’ve ever had a vendor quote that ballooned after “unexpected essentials,” you already know why the last dimension matters most to me.
Dimension 1: Installation — Ceiling grid vs. the underside of a cabinet
The LEDVANCE LED panel is designed as a drop-in replacement for a standard 600×600 ceiling tile. That’s its superpower. If your building has a suspended T-grid ceiling, the install is basically: turn off power, remove old troffer, wire the panel, drop it into the grid. Our electrician quoted about 45 minutes per panel. The mount is clean, and the panel sits flush.
The cabinet LED slim is a different beast. It’s thin, easy to mount under a cabinet, and most of the LEDVANCE cabinet LED slim reviews mention the clean light output. But it needs a separate driver, and the driver is not small enough to hide completely behind a 2-inch strip. On paper, each strip took 20 minutes to mount. In reality, the planning and driver placement took longer than the mounting. Dimension 2: Light spread — and the “can any light be used as a grow light” question
The LED panel gives a wide, even distribution. In a meeting room, that means no hot spots on the table and no dark corners near the projector screen. The Cabinet LED Slim, by contrast, is a narrow, directional strip. It’s great for task lighting and for making a pantry counter look intentional, but it won’t wash a whole room in light.
That difference matters when someone asks: “Can any light be used as a grow light?” I almost said yes. It’s tempting to think that because plants need light, any light will do. But the useful question is how much light reaches the plant and at what spectrum. A low-light office plant might survive under an LED panel sitting a few feet away. A cabinet strip could help with seedlings if you keep it close. Neither is a substitute for a real horticultural fixture for a plant that needs high light intensity.
So here’s the blunt version: can any light be used as a grow light? Only if the plant’s light requirement is low enough. A 40W LED panel is not automatically a grow light, and a slim strip is not a magic beanstalk. If PPFD numbers and spectrum charts don’t mean anything to you, buy a fixture that’s labeled as a grow light instead of trying to repurpose office lighting.
Conclusion: If the plant needs high light, don’t use an office light as a crop light. For low-light plants, an LED panel can help, but I wouldn’t count on it for anything serious.
Dimension 3: Control — Zigbee protocol vs. WLED (and why “WLED Zigbee” is a mixed-up search)
This is where I had to slow down and do homework. I’m not an engineer. I just know that if a light can’t turn on reliably, the company doesn’t care how pretty the color rendering is.
Zigbee is a protocol — a language that smart devices use to talk to each other over a low-power mesh network. In German spec sheets, you’ll sometimes see it written as Zigbee protokoll, which is why that phrase shows up in searches. Many LEDVANCE Smart+ products use Zigbee, and the compatible ones can connect to common hubs like SmartThings or Home Assistant. The catch: you need a Zigbee coordinator or gateway. It’s not “buy the light, tap the app, done” unless you already have a hub.
WLED is different. WLED is open-source firmware that runs on an ESP32 or similar microcontroller and drives addressable LED strips. It’s powerful, cheap, and great for a DIY project. But WLED is not a protocol, and it doesn’t speak Zigbee natively. The search “WLED Zigbee” usually comes from someone who wants flexible strip lighting to also work with their Zigbee system. You can bridge them through Home Assistant or another hub, but it’s not a plug-and-play feature.
For our office, I compared the cost of buying LEDVANCE lights with native Zigbee against the cost of using WLED on off-the-shelf strips. The WLED route looked cheaper until I added the ESP32s, power supplies, firmware updates, and the IT person’s time to troubleshoot a strip that wouldn’t sync. Plus, my IT lead was blunt: “I’ll support the network, but I don’t want to be the guy who fixes a LED strip in the pantry.”
Conclusion: If you want a reliable, low-maintenance smart lighting system in an office, choose native Zigbee products and get the right hub. If you enjoy tinkering and have a dedicated person for it, WLED can be fun. But don’t put a DIY firmware on a critical corridor light.
Dimension 4: Real total cost — and why I now ask “what’s not included?”
The “lowest quote wins” rule comes from an era when you could assume every supplier included the same hardware. That assumption doesn’t hold today. A cheap panel might not include a driver, mounting clips, a Zigbee module, or an emergency battery backup unit. Once you add those back, the “cheap” quote can stop being cheap.
For reference, the LEDVANCE 600×600 panel with Smart+ Zigbee was quoted at $95–$115 per unit in the quantities we needed, and the Cabinet LED Slim strips ran about $55–$80 per two-foot section including the driver, as of January 2025 quotes. Those aren’t fixed prices — lighting quotes vary by region, quantity, and time of year. Verify current prices before you budget.
One lower-priced panel I evaluated looked great until the sales rep added the driver, mounting frame, emergency backup, and shipping. The initial savings of about $1,100 turned into a final cost that was 18% higher than the LEDVANCE quote. I’m not naming that vendor because this isn’t a brand fight. It’s a quote-completeness fight. A transparent quote with one number and a list of exactly what’s included is easier to defend to finance than a low number with three change orders later.
Also worth noting: per FTC guidelines (ftc.gov), marketing claims about energy and environmental performance have to be truthful and substantiated. That means when someone calls a panel “high efficiency,” they should be able to back it up with a lumen-per-watt number. If they can’t, treat that as a sign to keep looking.
Conclusion: The panel with the cleanest cost picture wins, even if the sticker price is higher. That’s the transparency that protects you on the back end.
What I’d buy, and what I’d skip
If you’re choosing between these two LEDVANCE options, don’t force one to do the other’s job:
- Choose the LEDVANCE LED Panel for ceiling grid replacements, meeting rooms, open offices, or any space where you need even ambient light. If you want smart control, confirm the specific model has Smart+ / Zigbee on the box.
- Choose the LEDVANCE Cabinet LED Slim for under-cabinet task lighting, display shelves, or pantry counters. Factor in the driver placement and connector kit before you start.
- Skip WLED for mission-critical office lighting unless you have a dedicated DIY person and a clear support plan. It’s a decent hobby tool, not a procurement strategy.
- Skip the “any light can be a grow light” shortcut if you need plants to actually thrive. For low-light plants, sure; for high-light plants, buy a real grow light.
And before you place any order, get the “what’s not included” answer in writing. Take it from someone who had a $2,400 expense rejected because the vendor couldn’t provide a proper invoice — the cheapest price in the world isn’t cheap if it can’t pass finance.
